a teacher’s perspective

Office Yoga®: A Teacher’s Perspective
by Shailee Aragon

I was nervous to say the least. I had hosted a few beginner group classes but Office Yoga® was my first “real” yoga job. I didn’t know what to expect after all I was meeting brand people twice a week in their office on their lunch break. As if that wasn’t intimidating enough thoughts swirled in my head: “what if they already do yoga and they don’t like my class?” “since I’ve mostly only taught beginners, what if my class isn’t the right level for everyone?”

Now, looking back, I would tell myself what I tell my students: hook into your breath. Inhale. Exhale. Allow it all to flow. After a month of teaching, my Office Yoga® students boosted my confidence as much as I apparently boosted theirs.

Some of the feedback I received:

“I booked my work travel around your class next week because I really don’t want to miss Tuesday! My wife told me that she noticed a difference in my confidence and posture; even better: I actually feel like I can go through flows now.” -James

“You provide a good combination of the same stuff to make us feel like we are getting the hang of it and enough new stuff to challenge us.” -Casey

“Wow I just realized how much I need this in my life. I’ve even been practicing what I remember from class at home.” -Anton

“I feel so much better after class. I wish I would have known about this when I had my knee surgery because it is a lot more effective than what I was doing for physical therapy.” -Erica

It’s so easy to feel like you’re not doing enough as a yoga teacher. My Office Yoga® students though, have encouraged me just by sharing their experiences. I love seeing that my students are progressing and developing in their practice. It is even more amazing when they realize that the benefits of their practice extend beyond just physical. I am fueled by bringing healing modalities to all students regardless if they’ve been practicing for over a decade or are brand new to the mat.

Teaching for Office Yoga® has helped me grow and feel empowered.  So to my fellow teachers I saw: keep on teaching! You have no idea the impact you may be making on your students’ lives (both professional as well as personal).
