Playlist #11- Vrtti-s
Playlist #11- Vrtti-s (Activity in the Mind)
When our lives become busy and full, the mind tries it’s best to keep track of the never ending to-do list, so many decisions to be made, so many experiences to remember. Vrtti-s, “turnings or cyclings,” include all thoughts and emotions that spin around in our mind and keep us preoccupied. One goal of yoga is to calm and quiet the mind so these thoughts no longer distract us.
There are five Vrtti-s:
- Pramana (correct perception)
- Viparyaya (misperception)
- Vikalpa (imagination/fantasy)
- Nidra (sleep)
- Smrti (memory)
Vrtti-s are only harmful when they distort our perception or negatively influence our current thoughts. They are helpful when they contribute clarity and calmness. Otherwise they are neutral. Practicing yoga helps us cultivate a clear and steady mind.
Exercise: When listening to the following playlist, think of a time when a preconceived notion has caused you to judge someone unfairly, possibly based on a stereotype. How can you prevent this from happening again?
