Kristin Joys has been practicing yoga, almost every day, since 1999, and until summer 2017 she repeatedly insisted that she would never teach yoga— explaining that she loved the experience of being on her mat, moving & flowing, following instructors’ cues, a respite from thinking, planning, and being in charge.
For the first 10 years, Kristin’s practice focused on Ashtanga, studying locally as well as luminaries like Doug Swenson & David Williams. While traveling for work she stumbled into Anusara & Jivamukti classes and fell in love all over again. In September 2012 she participated in Off the Mat, Into the World with Seane Corn, Hala Khouri, and Suzanne Sterling. She began learning to float & fly in Spring 2014 and felt like magic interceded when successfully floating into her first press handstand in August 2018. She now enjoys many forms of vinyasa flow yoga.
Kristin received her RYT-200 Yoga Alliance certification from Full Circle Yoga in Winter Park in September 2017 and began teaching a few weeks later. Most recently, she studied handstands with Kino MacGregor, inversions with Day Christensen, trauma-sensitive yoga with YogaLoka, and completed a Level 1 Teacher Training in Baptiste Power Yoga with Luca Richards & Pino Rizzi. She taught in-person classes at both Searchlight Yoga & Wildflowers Yoga with the intention of offering challenging and fun experiences, giving students the opportunity to be present in their bodies and to learn courage by couraging. Since March 2020 she has been homebound, practicing (and teaching from time to time) online. Zoom is a lifeline for her.
When not on her mat, Kristin creates opportunities for students to learn about social entrepreneurship & sustainable business at the University of Florida where she directs the Social Impact & Sustainability Initiative in the Entrepreneurship & Innovation Center in the Warrington College of Business. Kristin believes “we learn courage by couraging” (as Mary Daly said, quoted in Daring Greatly by Brené Brown), and In 2019 she studied with Dr. Brené Brown to become a Certified Dare to LeadTM Facilitator. She also helps people to find & create impact careers and businesses to walk their talk around sustainability-related issues in her work with do good well consulting, a certified B Corporation.
